Day 3 of NYFW brings with it the hot ticket; Alexander Wang. it’s always a show that’s guaranteed to turn heads and #AWF15 was no different. The collection was a departure from the cut and style we’ve come to expect from Alexander Wang with the designer himself saying “I wanted to go somewhere new and completely opposite.” That statement certainly delivered its objective.
Models Behati Prinsloo and Kendall Jenner walked for Wang and both sent social media into a frenzy Tweeting and Instagramming pictures from backstage as they were being made up.
The models walked to The Day is My Enemy, a forthcoming release from the sixth studio album by The Prodigy and the lyrics and distinct grunge metal fusion sound gave an idea of what was to come. Dark apocalyptic angels stormed down the runway with faces like thunder, hair was wet and matted and make up was dark. “The idea behind the hair was that it should look dark and dirty, as if matted with blood” said one of the stylist team.
The collection itself was fierce and heavy, laden with chain mail and netting with a splash of red thrown in giving a nod to early nineties grunge. A fusion of grunge and metal, just like the music, this was an edgy, still very feminine collection which was borne from the darkest depths of Alexanders mind and translated into something very wearable and very striking. This was a far cry from anything Alexander has presented before and that was his exact mission, to take this #AWF15 collection to new territory. Models wore heavy chunky footwear including some super stomp boots that wouldn’t look out of place on Charli XCX. By Fall 2015 the high street will be awash with tributes to this collection and all the cool kids will be wearing it willingly in homage.
The FROW was undeniably A-list, fresh from his own Kanye West x Adidas presentation on Day 2, Kanye brought along Kim and North West who were sat with Nicki Minaj and gave endless photo opportunities for the baying paparazzi.
North West wore bespoke Alexander Wang (natch), a mini version of one of the looks shown on the runway but even this wasn’t enough to stop the mini fashionista from throwing her second diva strop of NYFW. (Smirk)
As the show closed, Alexander made a quick jog out on to the runway pausing only to wave before disappearing again. So there we have it, an insight into a far darker version of Alexander Wang, proving that re-invention doesn’t have to be light. This is a collection for dark angels everywhere, or at least in the upper echelon of society, expect to see Rihanna rocking this soon.
