Alessandro Michele: International Designer of The Year 2015

The 2015 International Designer Award will be presented to Alessandro Michele, in recognition of the year’s remarkable achievements in his role as Creative Director at Gucci. Taking the reins as Creative Director back in January 2015, his appointment marked a brave and significant shift in aesthetics for Gucci – a house famed for its leather goods and accessories; a phenomenal powerhouse that currently ranks No.2 in the global luxury goods market.  In the ten short months since Michele took up the role, he has presented four stellar collections that have caught the attention of the industry and consumers alike, and have set a brand new fashion agenda, confirming Gucci’s position as a truly directional fashion house.

The appointment of Michele as Creative Director marks the culmination of a successful 13 year career with the brand – having been brought into the Gucci fold by Tom Ford himself back in 2002 after a brief stint at Fendi, where he served as Senior Accessories Designer.  Michele’s unique understanding and appreciation of the historical codes of Gucci married with his modern take on romanticism have created a compelling new narrative for the brand.  His relationship with symbolism and granny chic has been evident at every turn.

Charged with overseeing all aspects of creative responsibility for the label, Alessandro Michele’s truly contemporary and highly original vision has undoubtedly returned the iconic house of Gucci to the frontline of fashion, making headway and headlines for all the right reasons; namely the amazing garments he’s consistently producing.

Natalie Massenet MBE commented: “Alessandro Michele is a phenomenon at Gucci. His exciting eclectic aesthetic has made an overnight impact on global fashion trends. It is not just that he has made the brand covetable and the product so desirable. He has also reinvigorated the retail experience bringing back playfulness and magic to the flagship store. This is a man who has his customer in his heart and celebrates them.”

Do you agree with the choice of designer for this award?  I know I do, I’ve long been a fan of Michele’s and his eclectic style fits my personality just perfectly.  Want to have your say?  Then join the conversation on social media: #BFA

NewGen unveils its Designers for 2016

Every year the British Fashion Council unveils a new crop of design talent to receive sponsorship and support from NewGen, the foundation in partnership with Topshop.

For the Spring 2016 season, nine experimental young brands will show their collections at London Fashion Week (held September 18th – 22nd) with either a Runway, Presentation or Exhibition (static) sponsorship.  The NewGen nine will also unveil a range of limited edition exclusive tees for Topshop later in the year.

“We are proud that TOPSHOP continues to play an integral part in nurturing the very best of our young design talent. NEWGEN has been instrumental in introducing home-grown designers to a global stage and the support it offers to fledgling designers, both commercially and creatively, is invaluable to their future success in the industry.” – Mary Homer, Managing Director of Topshop

If you think this line up looks familiar, it’s because it’s pretty damn close to the NewGen bill for Fall 2015 and the BFC have backed up their choices by saying that they’re committed to helping young Designers to launch successful and sustainable UK businesses.  A ploy that seems to be proving successful, some of these designers are now stocked at Net-a-Porter for online sales and another at Selfridges.

“The NewGen initiative has an unrivalled reputation as the scheme which has seen countless designers through to London Fashion Week and success in selling globally. The panel and I are always stunned to be able to meet designers and discover what they have to say at an early stage, and, with our teamwork, and Topshop’s sponsorship, to help fast-track their business savvy as well as their talent for design. Everyone who wants a window on the future shouldn’t be missing what our NEWGEN cohort has to say this season – they are as individualistic as London designers are, but also characterised by their collective pure enjoyment of clothes, innovation, artistry and a playful sense of fun. My only criticism is the dearth of accessory designers applying to NEWGEN. We want to see more! So please take this is a call-out for next season’s talent!”– Sarah Mower, Ambassador for emerging Talent, BFC.

Since it began in 1993, the NewGen initiative has acted as a promotional launch pad for young designers, attracting media profile, orders and investment from buyers all over the globe.  Previous NEWGEN winners include Alexander McQueen, Christopher Kane, Erdem, Jonathan Saunders, J.W. Anderson, Marques’Almeida, Mary Katrantzou, Nicholas Kirkwood, Roksanda Ilincic and Simone Rocha.

Here’s the Spring 2016 NewGen line up and a taster of what to expect from this fresh crop of design talent.

2015 CFDA Awards

The CFDA Awards recognise exceptional talent within the fashion industry and this year the nominees were all outstanding within their respective field.

Typically, designers arrive to the awards ceremony with a muse dressed to impress in something from the Designer’s current collection and competition on this years CFDA Awards red carpet was fierce.  from Anna Ewers in an Alexander Wang pailette dress with stomp boots, Amanda Seyfried in glittering Rodarte, right through to Janelle Monae in a stunning Tadashi Shoji cape dress, the red carpet was awash with knockout frocks.

There were a variety of presenters including Kim Kardashian and Taraji P. Henson giving out the awards, all eyes were on Kim Kardashian in Proenza Schouler as she hit the event within hours of announcing her second pregnancy, and the unveiling of the Caitlyn Jenner Vanity Fair cover.

Karlie Kloss never gives less than fantastic on the red carpet and this event was no different, wearing a DVF floor length Spanish inspired polka dot frock cut low at the front, the model looked phenomenal and confessed that under her gown, she wore flat shoes all night and felt great.

Models of the moment Natasha Poly and Gigi Hadid lit up the red carpet in Michael Kors; Poly in a statement red dress and Hadid in a glittering gold flared leg jumpsuit.

Juliette Lewis looked ethereal as she floated on to the red carped wearing a two piece Christian Siriano princess gown.  I have to admit, I had an audible gasp when I saw this gorgeous gown.

My ultimate favourite of the night was Diane Kruger, we all know the girl got immense fashion game and in a Prabal Gurung red garnet bustier gown, she was On Fleek.  As a wildcard runner up, I’m giving special credit to model Binx Walton for her conceptual Hood By Air creation, incidentally, Shayne Oliver of Hood By Air took home the award for Swarovski Award for Menswear.
