KKW Beauty

Kim Kardashian West has lent her name to so many products, whether it’s the controversial EoS lip balm, or the equally controversial Fit Tea, it’s pretty obvious that a Kim Kardashian West endorsement is worth big bucks to any brand.  Given that her youngest half siblings are spearheading Jenneration X with their self titled projects and exploits, it seems difficult to believe that Kimmy has steered clear of doing the same.

We all know that Kylie Jenner has been pretty much solely responsible for the rise in patients seeking lip augmentation procedures, despite denying her use of lip filler for years upon years.  None of which seems to have scarred her reputation as she now owns and runs one of the most profitable beauty businesses in the world, based primarily on a lip package called the Kylie Jenner Lip Kit.  Something that sky rocketed from day one and remains the most coveted item on the beauty market across a range of ages, and also the most frequently counterfeited.  Being the youngest of the Kardashian/Jenner Klan, Kylie knows a thing or two about the power of her sisters’ celebrity and roped in Khloe and Kim for a cameo appearance and feature as part of two limited edition Lip Kit collections named Koko and KKW respectively.  Both of which sold out in minutes.

Never one to miss a trick, in the days following the hugely successful collaboration, Kim registered the name KKW Beauty as a trademark, hinting at a stand alone collection under her own name.  Sure enough, a short teaser campaign followed, an Instagram account for KKW Beauty was created which within a day had amassed a 350k strong following and a whole bunch of non affiliated fake accounts.  With millennial pink as the brand’s hue of choice, the days ticked down on a pretty pink Instagram grid, hinting at what was to come.  Three days prior to launch, followers were treated to pictures of what critics called a “blacked up” Kim – something which was accused of being a deliberate attempt to generate publicity and highlight the product range – Kim apologised for the campaign pictures and claimed she’d learned from an innocent mistake.  KKW Beauty doubled its following and the product range was released, only to sell out completely in 2 minutes. TWO GODDAMN MINUTES VOYEURS!

Now I don’t own anything from the collection, I received the press release and I’ve got to admit, I rolled my eyes.  However, looking over the website and associated products, I was actually intrigued. This is a woman who has built her career off the back of a (pretty poor) sex tape, and the disproportionate size of her ass.  She created a shift in how we look at our bodies and made it ok to be bottom heavy, not just ok, but desirable, super fuckable even.  We’re looking at a woman who not only exploited the celebrity system, but turned it on its head and despite the origins of her celebrity status being somewhat questionable, you kind of have to applaud just how far she’s come, and the influence she has.  Remember, this is a woman who has made millions of dollars from a simple app in which she features as an animated avatar.  She’s quick to react and in this day and age, that means she’s super bankable.

In terms of her latest venture, the KKW Beauty collection is simple enough and consists of two mainline products in various shades.  The KKW Creme Liquid Lipstick Kit (cheaper than Kylie’s counterpart) and the KKW Creme Contour & Highlight Kit, after all Kim is responsible for the influx of highlight and contour kits brought to market by established beauty brands.  Why shouldn’t she cash in on a market she helped to create?  That technique you use to sculpt your cheekbones and slim your nose?  All down to Kim Kardashian West.  That little trick for reflecting the light off your brow bone?  Yup you guessed it, that’s another one from Kim’s arsenal.  They may have been used by makeup artists for years, but Kim made it mainstream.

So whilst I started off skeptical, I’m now actually pretty fascinated, admittedly more about how a woman who engineered a whole new genre within the already overcrowded cosmetics market managed to be so hugely successful.  Whether that’s down to the products, the presentation, or the fact that whatever this woman endorses goes stratospheric, I’m not sure.  What I am sure of is that this collection has been designed to last.  In a market that bases its trends on people like Kim Kardashian West, why shouldn’t she be in the driving seat of her own brand?  She has as many fiercely loyal followers as she does haters – both equally as interested in keeping up to date with Kim’s exploits and that’s big business Voyeurs.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a loyal follower, nor am I a hater, I’m intrigued by Kim and what she’s done to turn around the perception of women in the media for xennials like myself, generation X, and millennials.  I didn’t buy anything from her collection, nor did I try, but after reading the press release and doing a bit of research, I’m definitely more interested now, plus, I do own a Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Contour Kit so I’ve definitely fallen under her influence, even if it was unwittingly.  If the collection is restocked and happens to be in stock when I’m browsing, I’ll admit that I’d buy it, out of curiosity and intrigue more than anything else  but a sale’s a sale Voyeurs and that’s part of the beauty of the Kim Kardashian West business model.

Amanda Bell Elite Makeup Studio

Applying makeup isn’t just an art, it’s a god damn science.

In fact, no longer reserved just for celebrities, it’s become perfectly normal for regular people like you and I to employ the services of a Makeup Artist or Makeup Studio for a special occasion, in order to get that red carpet look and flawless finish.  But what if, you could have the best of both worlds?  Hear me out Voyeurs, I’m talking Makeup Artist techniques and a flawless, Insta-worthy finish, using your own makeup kit.  Piqued your interest?  Then read on….

Amanda Bell is an Elite Makeup Artist and I guarantee that whilst you might not know her name (yet), you most definitely know her work.  Head Makeup Artist for eight years at The BAFTAs and a regular behind the scenes of some of the biggest London Fashion Week shows, Amanda Bell is responsible for creating some jaw dropping beauty looks.  With Goldie Hawn, Sienna Miller and Emilia Fox amongst her clients and a wealth of expertise in beauty, it was only a matter of time before a Makeup Studio followed.  It’s all good and well having high profile and celebrity clients, but what really fascinates Bell, is the everyday woman; the woman who gets up in the morning and does the school run before nipping to Tesco, the woman who suits up for her role as a company executive, the 16 year old experimenting with makeup and still discovering her look.  Bell thrives on this, on helping women like you and I and that’s the aim of her latest self named business in Teesside.  I went along to the VIP launch of Amanda Bell Elite Makeup Studio to find out what you can expect from this brand new venture.

“Over the past 20 years I’ve worked in very high profile, high octane environments and I’ve loved that, but I’ve realised this is what really makes me tick; makeup for real women who want to look and feel amazing in real life.  Women can get stuck in being the best version of themselves – stuck in the time they felt most beautiful and don’t move on years later – and I can teach them that with makeup they can create the best of themselves at any given age.”  Amanda Bell, Elite Makeup Artist

After thinking long and hard about setting up a dedicated makeup studio, Bell found premises in Constance House, Norton and tells me she “just knew it was right” the first time she viewed the loft space above the Christian Alexander boutique on the picturesque high street.  After some renovation and a little styling, the space has been set up to cater for up to six clients at a time, with six individual makeup stations complete with illuminated mirrors each furnished with cotton pads, q-tips and spoolie brushes.  Utilising as much natural light as possible from the dormer window, the studio is bright and most importantly, very instagrammable.  The decor is simple but effective, from the mirrored dresser in the window topped with candle votives that spell out “Amanda Bell” to the family photographs hung with pride in the waiting area, everything in the studio has been well planned and well thought out.

The similarity with other makeup studios ends there.  Whilst Bell is still perfectly set up to cater for her regular bridal parties, batchelorette parties and even teen birthday parties, the real reason for this particular set up is her Makeup Masterclasses.  Having been trained by some of the best makeup artists in the industry including Gucci Westman, Fred Farrugia and Ross Burton, Bell wants to pass on some of those lessons and inspire women to fall in love with makeup and be confident in using it.

“Women spend so much money on makeup and brushes, they bring them home and then don’t know what to do with them and it can be such a waste of money!  I want to teach women how to use and love their own makeup by giving step by step demonstrations and personal one on one coaching, using their own products as far as possible.”

The idea is that you book your place, rock up with your kit and learn how to make your makeup bag work for you in any given scenario.  Whether it’s getting to grip with the basics, or prepping for a family wedding, each masterclass aims to equip you with the skills and techniques needed to create a signature look that you can then recreate at home again and again.   With a suite of five masterclasses to choose from all lasting 2.5 hours and priced at £75 per person, there’s something for everyone from the makeup-phobic, to the devout makeup lover:

COMPLEXION PERFECTION

Learn how to create the perfect canvas for your makeup with techniques to smooth and enhance your features, perfectly colour match your base, and add radiance to your skin.

MAC launches Makeup Parties

I’d be willing to bet that each and every one of you reading this owns at least one MAC product.  Whether it’s the iconic Ruby Woo lipstick (the perfect matte red, seriously, try it) or makeup bag staple Strobe Cream, there’s no doubting MAC is a favourite amongst Makeup Artists, Models and yes, regular people the world over.  The brand’s infamous Vival Glam collaborations have even been known to stop traffic.

If you’re a makeup lover, you’ll have experienced the frustration of fighting through the swarms of teenagers who monopolise the MAC counter on a weekend and you’ll understand the joy of finding your perfect Mineralise foundation shade.  Yes, MAC really is THAT rollercoaster, but when you hit your stride and find YOUR hero products, you’ll sharpen your elbows and become a counter pro.

If you’re ‘makeup curious’ in that you love the thought of creating looks but aren’t really sure how to experiment, or are intimidated by the huge choice of shades and finishes, then a select few MAC counters have a little trick up their sleeve that was tailor made for you……

Enter the MAC Party.  Cue fanfare and streamers because this one has been a long time coming.  The basic concept:  Grab up to 8 of your best gals, head on over to the MAC counter and you’ll have 2 MAC Makeup Artists who’ll give you expert tuition on how to create the perfect face using MAC products and brushes.  That’s right Voyeurs, MAC just played their ace card.

I was invited along to MAC House of Fraser at Intu Metrocentre to get the skinny on the MAC Party concept and to find out what other counter services MAC offer their clients.  I met Makeup Artist Josephine who treated me to ‘Makeup in 60 Minutes’, one of the counter’s most popular services, whilst we chatted.  Because my usual look is an uber bold lip and minimal eye, we opted for the reverse; a bold eye with a dewy base and nude lip.  As Josephine got to work she told me that staff are super excited about the imminent launch of MAC Party as it’s long overdue and gives artists a chance to work collaboratively with clients to create something really Bespoke and wearable.

Whilst we’re chatting, Josephine preps my face with Mineralise super light foundation in NW20, a shade so perfect it’s barely detectable, with a pop of ‘Softly Does It’ cream blush across my cheekbones.  In a few easy steps, we have the perfect base that’s set in place with a rose scented fixing spray.

While she gets to work on creating a deep blue eye look, Josephine tells me that MAC Party has been designed as a more in depth, tuition based service.  So rather than rocking up for a special occasion and having a Makeup Artist create a look for you, this is all about learning how to create a super effective look for yourself.  It’s still a hands on service, a Makeup Artist will demonstrate on your face in front of the mirror and then you recreate it – with support obvs – simples.  Aren’t they worried it will negate the need for a makeup service?  Absolutely not says Josephine; you can never learn enough about makeup.  With new techniques, trends and products turning over faster than the seasons change, she thinks that this is a service that equips and empowers MAC clients to learn more about what works for them and is a great way to push colour boundaries.  I’ve got to say, I’m with her on that one.

Josephine has been with MAC for long enough to know that my signature shade is Heroine, that I’m always lingering around the blue or purple lipsticks and that I’ll push the envelope when it comes to colours so I don’t hesitate when she suggests a combo of blue liner and blue mascara to highlight my green eyes.

With the rise of online makeup tutorials and younger girls looking to makeup as a career choice, we talk about how MAC Party could help younger teenagers to achieve this and also boost confidence.  My almost teenage sister is the perfect candidate for this – and at £25 per person (which is redeemable against products) it’s not out of reach for the younger market.  Makeup lovers in this age group save their pocket money to splurge on cosmetics and if they’re getting a lesson in how to apply it at the same time, everybody’s winning right?

FullSizeRender 12

In exactly 60 minutes, I’m done.  Using a blend of shades Get Physical and In The Shadows, Josephine has created the perfect dramatic, blown out eye look in a rich, royal blue.  Sound scary?  It’s really not, the blue makes my green eyes pop and it’s surprisgly easy to wear as a day or evening look as it blows out into a muted copper hue (this is where MAC Party comes in handy as it teaches you how to wear shades you might not normally consider).

Got a special occasion on the horizon and want to take the hard work out of the prep?  ‘Makeup in 60 Minutes’ is the perfect solution, not only will you leave with the perfect face based on your brief, but you’ll also be given a crib sheet with every product used for reference.

There’s also an express makeup service which focuses on one particular aspect of makeup, think killer eyes, or the perfect base and contour and then you top up with the bits you’re best at.  MAC Party is the special one; girls nights out, Batchelorette parties, birthday parties, basically any reason you can think of to get a group of friends together to bond over skincare and makeup.  It’s the service you never knew you needed, until now.

When I come to leave, I’m given a box containing sample sizes of everything we’ve used today and a few little extras (Matte Royals lipstick anyone?) to experiment with at home.

Try it out for yourselves Voyeurs, its makeup, it’s personal and bespoke to you, whether it’s a natural, barely there look, or a bold, heavy made up look that you prefer, MAC’s expert Makeup Artists are there to help and advise.  All counter services are bookable at a cost which is redeemable against products so think of it like this, if you know you were going there to buy a product, why not book a service anyway?

And with that little gem, I bid you goodnight….

I visited the MAC counter at House of Fraser Intu Metrocentre and was given a complimentary Makeup in 60 Minutes service which costs £55.  MAC Party is available at selected stores only and is bookable at this store by calling 0370 192 5043
