Catch Up on the The Tyne & Wear Lifestyle Awards 2016

Missed the Tyne & Wear Lifestyle Awards on TV?  How could you Voyeurs?!

You’ll know by now that the Newcastle Discovery Museum played host to the inaugural Lifestyle Awards Ceremony recently which produced an honours list for North East business.  The best of the best, as shortlisted and voted for by you, the North East public.

Made TV broadcast the entire event live with a live edition of The Lowdown as a prelude to the big event itself, looking at red carpet dressing, fashion trends and prepping for the awards.

Why should you watch it?  One word: ME!  No seriously, you should watch it because the Lifestyle Awards is your essential guide to what’s hot in the North East in 2016/17.  You’ll discover the hottest nightspots, the best places to eat and maybe even a hidden gem or two that you weren’t already aware of.  What’s really awesome about these awards is that they don’t just focus on Newcastle – an undeniably awesome city – but there is so much more to Tyne & Wear than just our Geordie Hub.

So, this of this as your second chance, your saving grace….. I’m giving you the power to watch the entire show at your leisure, as many times as you like using the following links.  Although I will say this, you might want to just skip ahead to part two, that’s the best bit, I’m told it’s because I’m in it but I can neither confirm nor deny that*…… (*It’s absolutely true Voyeurs)

So here you go, knock yourself out Voyeurs…..

Fighting Fit Part 1: Kern Fitness

Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll know that my next fight is on May 6th and that for most of this year so far, I’ve been plagued with injury.  Not a great start.

I’m a HUGE #FitnessVoyeur and had hoped to maintain the leanness I achieved in December when I hit my fighting weight but due to injury, fatigue and resulting lack of training (and bingeing) it just hasn’t happened, so, long story short we’re three months on and I’m almost two stone heavier.  Let me clarify, my weight gain was partially to do with my next fight but not wholly done in the best way and now I’m in a position where I feel ready to get back on it and convert some of this fat into muscle.

Now, anyone can box, you learn the technique, the footwork and the combinations and you learn the hard way to keep your hands up; but not everyone can be a fighter, that’s either in you or it’s not, and it’s definitely in me.

So, in order to get in the best fighting shape I can, I’ve enlisted the best of the best, trainers and instructors who understand my mentality and who will push me as far as I can go and beyond.  First up, Kern Fitness….

Rehabilitation Is Key

Kern Fitness is a pretty new fitness studio in Newcastle city centre, specialising in EMS (Electro-Muscular-Stimulation) which is used by the NBA to rehabilitate injured basketball players and get them back on the court faster and the technology and theory are sound.

the principle of EMS is simple, but sounds complicated;

“We electrical stimuli from a control unit to an individual adjustable vest. The control unit generates a harmless milliAmp electric current with carefully controlled impulse, frequency, duration, intensity and shape. The individually adjustable vest is integrated with 10 electrodes which send the stimuli to all body parts: arms, chest, back, abdomen, hips, buttocks and legs, so agonist and antagonist muscles are trained simultaneously, e.g. triceps and biceps.”

Muscles are stimulated with low frequency current, like a TENS machine, to generate resistance that you then work against. The stronger the impulse intensity, the more muscle fibres are recruited and the stronger the muscle contraction.

Let me break it down for you, you put on some high tech equipment (all black so bonus points for the added slimming effect) and you’re hooked up to a machine which delivers a pulsed current direct to your muscles and you work out using slow and controlled movements during the 20 minutes that you’re plugged in to the matrix.

This week I started an 8 week programme with Kern which will focus on strength and rehabilitation for my injured back an shoulder, once I’m hooked up to the machine we go through a familiarisation round where the current is set low and I hold a squat until we find the right frequency and we can begin.

Don’t be fooled by the fact that sessions are short, 20 minutes of EMS training is equivalent to 3 hours of conventional training, every second of EMS activation, your muscles are stimulated 85 times generating a resistance that you have to work against with every movement or exercise you do.  So, Josep (my Kern Trainer) puts me through a series of exercises specific to my needs including boxing which we do fast during the non activation period, and slow during the pulse period, a plank series, a weight series and a squat series.  It might not sound like much but after 20 minutes of EMS training the sweat is running off my face.

At the end of the session, Josep unplugs me from the matrix but leaves my lower back plugged in and we work on a series of stretches with constant activation in order to try to rehabilitate my injury – I’ll keep you updated with how it’s working out.

The best thing about Kern Fitness is that you don’t need to bring anything with you, no gym kit, no sneakers, nada.  Everything is provided and at only 20 minutes long, you can squeeze it in during your lunch break, whilst you’re out shopping or in between meetings.

I’m doing 2 sessions per week – this is what’s advised so that your body can recover in-between sessions and incase of DOMS so I’ll be back on Thursday for more and I’ll post about my progress every fortnight so you can see how I’m getting on but for now I’m signed up, sold and committed!

EMS via Kern Fitness is not just for boxers, it’s suitable for anyone, whether you want to tone up, lose fat or just try something new to compliment your existing workout routine, I’d strongly recommend giving it a try, particularly if you have a niggling sports injury.

Lava Shell Massage

Ok Voyeurs, you know by now that I’m a fitness freak and that I don’t do things by halves.  I like to box, play roller derby and lift weights and all those crazy intense sports take their toll on my body.  If I’m not bruised and battered from boxing, then I’m grazed and bruised from playing roller derby – and that’s just the visible evidence.

I actually have a chronic condition called Fibromyalgia which has an effect on my joints and muscle groups causing widespread pain blah blah blah, it’s not interesting, nor is it something I usually discuss but I promise there’s a point to this reference and it’s kind of relevant.  Putting my body through extra stress by choosing to play sports and participate in gym classes is something I have to manage and my weapon of choice for this is massage and muscle manipulation.

IMG_7480

There’s nothing better than waking up to a major case of DOMS and knowing that you have a massage booked to work some of the stresses away.  Lately I’ve been road testing the exotically named Lava Shell Massage at Newcastle Hair and Beauty Clinic and the benefits have been immense.  The treatment has been featured in Vogue magazine having been dubbed “the new hot stones” and it was the most requested training for Beauty Therapists in 2015.

LAVA-SHELLS

My Therapist, Gemma, is small and mighty, don’t be fooled by her tiny stature, she certainly packs a punch and more over, she enjoys massage.  Gemma says there’s something satisfying about working out knots, although she tells me I’m literally the stiffest person she’s ever worked on and that I’m “like a rock”.  Gemma makes each Lava Shell massage bespoke to the individual – if there are areas which need manual manipulation she’ll work this into the treatment and then use the heat from the shells to soften the muscles.  The treatment also benefits the Therapist, reducing the risk of RSI – so, wins all round.

Similar in style to a Hot Stone massage but way less messy, Lava Shell massage is a type of heat treatment that uses smooth Tiger-striped clam shells as a massage tool.  Rather than using water to heat from the outside in as with a Hot Stone massage, the heat is produced by inserting a ‘lava gel sachet’ and ‘activator liquid’ into the shell and then sealed in order to heat from the inside out.  The heat is retained for around two hours, easily enough time to deliver an insanely good treatment.

If, like me, your muscles are harder than sheet metal, Lava Shell massage can be hugely beneficial.  Obviously the heat helps to relax tense muscles, but the shells also give off calcium ions when heated, these ions transfer to the skin and can help to firm and tone the skins appearance, not one of the published benefits, but a benefit none the less.

Skin is prepped with oil like in a regular massage and your Therapist will identify any particularly tense areas, (for me, that’s literally every inch).  The shells can be used in different orientations to give a different effect, the smooth surface is used for all over massage and transferring heat to weary muscles and the narrow edge is used to work tense shoulder blades and calves.

The great thing about this treatment is that you have the option of a focussed, tailored back massage, or a relaxing full body experience, it’s bespoke to your needs and less generic than other similar treatments.  It’s administered in a darkened, candle lit room, it’s a struggle not to fall asleep but if you can, it’s worth it as this is such a pleasant treatment.  If you’re a fan of massage, or if you’re a sports fanatic then this is one for you to try as it’s fantastic for relaxing and unwinding; I have an encapsulated shoulder and I’m trying to put off impending surgery as long as possible and I truly believe that this treatment is helping with that.  I’d highly recommend it for sports injuries or long term conditions, or just as a treat to yourself after a long day and a real bonus is that after having this treatment I sleep way better than I do on a regular night and it’s worth it just for that. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzz……

Pixie Tenenbaum: This Girl Can

I’ve been shortlisted for an Active Newcastle This Girl Can Award!

Huge, massive thanks to everyone who nominated me, and also my roller derby league Newcastle Roller Girls, in the Active Newcastle #ThisGirlCan Awards.   I can’t tell you how psyched I am to have been shortlisted and how freaking awesome you all are!

This Girl Can is a national initiative and has existed in Newcastle for a year now with a huge media presence and participation from lots of local sports teams and solo Ambassadors; in a nutshell, the initiative aims to address the gender gap in sport and support more women and girls into sport and fitness.

12642903_538800432992141_47805984007006156_n-1

The main thing you need to know is that the whole This Girl Can thing is really cool, fact.  There are Ambassadors (just like me) all over the country and we’re out there doing our thing, being active and promoting, supporting and celebrating women in sport.  It’s not about forcing fitness on to people, it’s about saying that no matter what your shape, size, ability or weakness, there’s a place for you in the world of sport.  It absolutely doesn’t matter what you look like when you’re working out, and the more girls who really get that message, the better.  After all, if you’re looking goddamn beautiful after a workout, then you probably didn’t work hard enough.

The Active Newcastle This Girl Can Awards ceremony takes place on Saturday march 5th 2016 at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Newcastle and with literally a billion (ok, not quite a billion) awards up for grabs, all voted for by you the public; it promises to be a fun filled and exciting night.  The best bit is that it’s all about how well we’ve done as a region in closing the gender gap in sport, something we should really all be proud of.

IMG_4581

If you’re a girl, woman, lady, queen, whatever you want to call yourself, and you’ve thrown on a pair of sneakers and ran around the park, swung a kettlebell, punched a heavy bag or anything else active in the last twelve months, then you’re officially one of us, you’re one of those girls who can; and man, it’s a great feeling right?

If you’re not yet convinced but your interest is piqued, then take a class, go to the park, head to the beach for a walk, get up, get out and do something active.  Chances are that you’ll meet other girls who can along the way and we’re a great community here in Newcastle.  Whatever you do, do it for you and do it because you can.  It’s easy to stay home and armed with a whole raft of reasons not to it’s easy to convince yourself not to bother but the real winners are the ones out there doing it despite the reasons not to, they’re the girls who can, and wouldn’t you rather be in their gang?

I Need Your Vote! This Girl Can Awards

If you follow me then you’ll know that I’m an Ambassador for the #ThisGirlCan initiative in Newcastle.  having been involved in sport both competitively and recreationally from an early age, I’m proud to be a spokesperson for the initiative in supporting women into sport regardless of their appearance or ability.

Anyone who knows me in real life knows that the last few years have been a bit of a rollercoaster in terms of health and after finally having major surgery (not without its complications) last July, I used fitness as a rehabilitative measure and have continued to do so citing it as my escapism.  I also have a disabled child whom I try to keep as active as possible in order for him to have the same childhood experiences as other children – something I very rarely talk about.  It’s fair to say that fitness and sport are a huge part of my life.

It is now one year since the Sport England, This Girl Can campaign was launched.  This Girl Can aims to address the gender gap between males and females with 1.73 million less females taking part in sport and physical activity.  To acknowledge the success of the campaign, Active Newcastle are hosting an Awards Ceremony taking place at 7pm Saturday March 5th 2016.  The awards will recognise and reward the achievements of women from the North East who are representing their sport or activity, of which I am one!

There are several categories in which you can cast your vote, I’m up for the award of ‘Ambassador of the Year’ and also ‘Commitment to #ThisGirlCan’, and my Roller Derby Team, Newcastle Roller Girls are up for ‘Club / Group of the Year’ – I’d absolutely love it if you’d show your support by voting for us in these categories.

Now the important bit: To nominate / vote contact kerry.nesbitt@newcastle.gov.uk  by Friday 19th February with your nomination and reasons along with the category in which you wish to nominate and the results will be announced at the awards ceremony on March 5th.
