Ivy Park SS18

In a move carefully orchestrated by Queen Bey herself, the Ivy Park SS18 collection drops on International Women’s Day 2018 with a pretty dope campaign to accompany it.

Shot in Crystal Palace Sports Centre, the campaign is centred around the idea that there is a sport out there for everyone, you just need to find “The One”.  When Ivy Park first launched, it made the mistake of dropping a gazillion different styles in a percrillion different colour ways meaning it felt a little muddled and almost lost its message.  I went to the launch and at the time, the premise was good, but somewhere along the way, that message of female empowerment was lost.

Now though the collection is curated and the benefit of hindsight has shown Ivy Park Holdings exactly what people want from an athleisure brand that’s as fit for the gym as it is for the streets.  With a core range of shapes and an introduction of a new accent colour with each new inter-seasonal drop, customer buying trends have been key to establishing the brand for what it is today.  Remember Voyeurs, Ivy Park isn’t Beyonce’s first foray into the world of fashion, (House of Deréon anyone?) and she knows that this needs to be perfectly pitched to fit her carefully curated image.

So, is the collection any good?

Well yes actually.  A large proportion of my gym wardrobe is made up of Ivy Park pieces and I’m not being paid to say that, or to wear them.  In the beginning I was certain I wouldn’t be a fan and after being gifted a few items from the inaugural season, I’ve become a genuine fan.  Pieces are stylish and functional and despite being sold in Topshop which is primarily a fashion store, Ivy Park stays true to it’s mission statement and is pretty awesome gym wear.  There are a range of cuts, styles, lengths and depths of leggings available and they have a two way stretch meaning that they don’t sag after a few wears and washes.  Trust me when I say, they’re worth the hype.  In fact, every time I’m at The Barre, I’d say there’s always at least five other Barre Belles in there wearing the brand.

Grey Cropped Ivy Park top with hood and ankle logo Ivy Park Leggings
Ankle Logo Leggings £25
Red cropped Ivy park sweater with red Ivy Park shorts
Sweater £37, Shorts £24

The campaign itself was shot by director Jonas Lindstroem and features a diverse (natch) cast of athletic talent who’ll make you want to think twice about cancelling that gym membership you never use.  Focussing on female empowerment as its main driver, the campaign has no shameless appearances by Beyonce leaving the collection itself to speak to the viewer.  High Five Bey.

Personally, I’m a big fan, I think after a weak start, Ivy Park has come back stronger with every drop and has established itself firmly at the top of every fashionistas gym wear wardrobe, it’s a brand that oozes urban cool and I know I’ll be buying from the SS18 drop.  Like right now….

LONDUNN + MISSGUIDED BY JOURDAN DUNN

The LONDUNN + Missguided collection landed this week and it’s best described as a fusion of athleisure and fierce street wear.  With a focus on sports luxe fabrics such as jersey, velour and heavy cottons, and on trend shapes including bell sleeves, open backs and wide rip cords, the collection is aimed not at street stylers, but at those who want to emulate the look of street stylers.

Model Jourdan Dunn is the driving force behind this collaboration, as Creative Director she’s on a mission to inspire confidence in women.  Using her own personal style as inspiration for the looks in the collection, Dunn set out to create shapes that are not only bang on sub-trend, but flattering to the female body too.  The campaign is a celebration of female empowerment with a girl squad hand selected by, and featuring Dunn herself.

Stand out pieces include the bell sleeved bodysuits, velour track pants and the logo-ed to the max underwear in jersey or mesh.  Building on and fusing the micro-trend for whale net tights above a denim waistband and the obvious Calvin Klein visible underwear trend.

LONDUNN + Missguided is the younger sister to Beyonce’s Ivy Park, where Ivy Park is something you’d definitely wear to the gym, LONDUNN is something else.  It’s for when you want you want to show off the body you got in the gym, for when you want your fierceness to do the talking.  Dunn’s mantra and famous tattoo ‘You owe it to yourself, set the world on fire’ provides the strap line to the campaign and a signature for the collection.

With prices starting at just £12, it’s definitely affordable, there are some sequins in the first drop too for those of you who can’t do without a bit of bling in their wardrobe.  The most expensive piece tops out at only £60 in this first release of the collection making it one of the most on trend, affordable celebrity collaborations around.  The collection is a grower too Voyeurs – I wasn’t overly keen on it when I was sent a preview but the more I looked at it, the more I could see it infiltrating my wardrobe.  I have the bell sleeved body suit and the velour pants already…..

Sports Luxe Dressing at Silverlink Shopping Park

If there’s one trend that’s gathering pace right now, it’s the Sports Luxe trend.  Done right, it’s the epitome of cool, with trailblazers Vetements, Puma x Fenty and Hood by Air leading the pack on the runway.  Get it wrong however and it’s a whole other story.  So, what exactly is Sports Luxe and how do you wear it?

I was asked by Silverlink Retail Park to compile a trend report on Sports Luxe with some handy tips on how to recreate the look on the high street.  IRL the trend is softer and way easier to wear – on the runway it’s harsh and extreme but the high street interpretation lends itself to some pretty awesome looks and it’s a trend that fits my lifestyle perfectly so I was looking forward to getting stuck into this.

Sports Luxe is a trend you can wear for work or play, based around the idea of the practicality and functionality of sportswear, combined with tailored shapes and clean lines to keep it current and stop it veering into scruffy territory.  Think chiffon dresses with a soft sweater thrown over the top, or retro Adidas sweatpants with a blouse.  Ballet pink and grey are the colours du jour for this trend and functional details such as chunky zippers will score you extra points.

At Silverlink Shopping Park in North Tyneside, there are a surprising number of high street fashion stores in close proximity including Next, New Look, H&M, River Island and Marks & Spencer.  The real gem amongst them though is Outfit.  One store, seven highstreet fashion brands all from the house of Aurora fashions; Topshop, Warehouse, Dorothy Perkins & Miss Selfridge are amongst the fashion favourites you’ll find in this store and the place is brimming with wearable Sports Luxe garments in a whole array of textures.

H&M came up trumps with these modern wearable takes on the sportswear trend and in this season’s key colours of ballet pink and cobalt blue too, with a pretty wide range, there’s something for all tastes and they’re at the cheaper end of the scale making it accessible for everyone.  River Island is great for solid sporty basics, think Beyonce’s leotard microtrend translated to the highstreet, and you’re on the right track. With cotton bodysuits for just £16 they’re up at the top end of my list – throw an embroidered bomber over the top and you’ll be werking Sports Luxe in no time.

Across the Shopping Park in New Look there’s a whole section dedicated to creating the Sports Luxe look, with oversized sweater dresses and shredded hoodies it’s very similar to the Hood by Air aesthetic on a high street budget.  Head here for lightweight layering to throw over your Sports Luxe basic pieces.  I spotted a soft grey playsuit – technically nightwear –  but perfect for nailing the trend in Summer if you’re feeling confident, perfection with chunky boots and a light duster jacket for shrobing.

In Outfit you’re greeted with items that fit the brief as soon as you enter the store and it’s a fresher, more fashion conscious effort at Sports Luxe.  With Topshop leading the field (as always) there’s a choice of crossover ballet tops, layered dresses, faux fur slides and velour sweaters (very Vetements) to choose from meaning this is the best choice for North East Fashionistas.

With so many leading high street fashion retailers in one place, its hard not to get carried away, especially seeing as this is one of my favourite trends to emerge from the runways of the fashion capitals.  I couldn’t resist the faux fur slides, the layered dress and the sweater on the Topshop mannequin so all of those made their way home with me.  I stocked up on calf high Adidas sports socks from JD Sports (which are crying out to be worn with those slides) as these look great with pleated midi skirts, especially in metallic shades.

So, with Sports Luxe being the perfect pan-season trend I’d say you’ve got a whole year to perfect it and work out your take on the look.
